The American Lung Association

The American Lung Association is a non-profit organization focusing on fighting lung disease and with a main focus on asthma, tobacco control and air quality.

The American Lung Association was founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis as the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis.  It was renamed The National Tuberculosis Association (NTA) in 1918 and then again renamed The National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association (NTRDA) in 1968.  In 1973 it was finally named The American Lung Association, which is how we know it today.

The American Lung Association is an excellent resource for people who are trying to quit smoking

“It’s a matter of life and death”

The above quote was and is the most famous tagline of the American Lung Association.  The logo for the American Lung Association is a modified version of the Cross of Lorraine and was suggested as the logo by Dr. Gilbert Sersiron, a physician, in 1902, symbolizing the crusade against tuberculosis.

Funded publically and with grants and gifts from corporations, foundations and government agencies, one of the biggest American Lung Association fundraisers is the Christmas Seals program, raising awareness and money for tuberculosis and lung disease since 1908.

The American Lung Association is an excellent resource for people who are trying to quit smoking as well as loved ones of smokers.  Educating the public regarding lung health, diseases and disease prevention, the American Lung Association has a great deal of information and resources to offer the general public.

The American Lung Association is currently holding a Smoke-Free Air Challenge.  The American Lung Association explains that secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard killing 50,000 nonsmoking Americans each year.  So far, 23 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have met the challenge and passed comprehensive smoke-free air laws, protecting workers and patrons from exposure to secondhand smoke.

Completely eliminating all indoor smoking is the only way to 100% protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke, which is why this challenge is so important.

The American Lung Association offers many publications and information on quitting smoking.  One such book is called American Lung Association 7 Steps to a Smoke-Free Life and can be found on EBay or Amazon.com for under $10.00.
You can find further information regarding the American Lung Association on their website at http://www.lungusa.org or by calling 1-800-LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872).

The American Lung Association Hotline is manned by specially trained Tobacco Quit Line Specialists who receive certification through a training program supplied by the Mayo Clinic.

Though the Tobacco Quit Line Specialists may not be ex-smokers themselves, they can offer valuable information regarding how to deal with withdrawal symptoms as well as information for free smoking cessation help.  Upon request, they can send you an information packet to help you with your quitting smoking plan.
