Nicotine addiction is one of the worst addictions anyone can have. It can be far worse than many drugs and it’s something many struggle with. If you’ve tried everything to quit and have found yourself to be unsuccessful, you may try tapering off to stop smoking cigarettes.
Quitting any addiction can be trying, but tobacco cigarettes are especially tricky. If you’ve spoken to other smokers, you’ve probably been told that the cravings never cease. This idea can be a definite deterrent for someone who is considering stopping smoking.
Cutting back on the number of cigarettes you smoke can help you transition into a tobacco free life
The idea behind tapering off of cigarettes is that it’s a more non-rushed approach, which allows a smoker to go through withdrawals at a slower rate, making the transition easier.
The smoker should first set a goal as far as a quit date. He or she should also set goals regarding the number of cigarettes they are cutting back to and dates or time frames for each cutback.
For example, you might set a goal to quit smoking six months from your start date. You may decide that you can handle tapering off every 2 weeks. You can plan on the amount of cigarettes you will be cutting down to per day. It might be helpful to write these goals on a calendar.
Practice deep breathing exercises and learn to control your stress levels with something other than a cigarette. Now is the time to begin practicing different stress relief methods unrelated to smoking to discover which methods will work best for you.
For some people, eating candy or chewing gum works. Some individuals use a quick walk around the block to relieve stress. Walking is far more better an option than eating candy for the obvious weight-related reasons. Many people gain weight when they quit smoking because they used food to satisfy their needs. Ideally, you’ll eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise as a means of staying healthy and combating nicotine fits.
If you find the tapering isn’t working, re-evaluate how much you are tapering at a time. You may have to re-work your plan more than once before you come up with a plan which will work for you.
It’s important to remember that no individual on this earth started out smoking in this life. We were all put here to eat and drink water. The idea that we need cigarettes or things which are bad for us is the addiction talking. This is something you did to yourself and as with anything that an individual is trying to reverse, reversal always takes a lot more effort, time and energy than it took the person to get there.
You’ll need the support of your friends and family and don’t let your peers pressure you into smoking.
