When teens smoke, it can be very frustrating and scary for their parents, especially parents who are non-smokers. Typically, parents who smoke want better for their children and struggle to keep their kids from smoking too.
If you’re the parent of a teen who you think might be smoking (or if you already know that they are smoking), the only thing you can do is educate them. Unfortunately teenagers aren’t thinking about the cost of cigarettes most of the time, because they can “bum” them off of friends and kids at school who often times take them from their parents or an older sibling.
All you can do is educate your kids regarding the hazards of smoking and what kind of future is laid out ahead of them if they choose to become a smoker
Did you know that 80% of adult smokers started smoking as teenagers? The American Lung Association estimates that every minute 4,800 teens will have their first cigarette. The statistics are astounding and shocking. Of the 4,800 teens who are about to try their very first cigarette, approximately 2,000 of them will become chain smokers. These statistics are both disturbing and frustrating.
People tend to heard together when they smoke. Have you noticed how when one smoker goes outside to have a cigarette, the rest will follow? My family has a dog named Horatio who cannot stand to miss anything. If we are inside and he is outside (or visa-versa), you can guarantee that he’ll be whining and jumping at the door. My brother-in-law, who also lives with us and is a smoker, just shakes his head and says, “that dog is just afraid he’s gonna miss something important”. It takes all my self control not to point out that he is not so different then Horatio. My brother-in-law can be on his way inside from having a long cigarette break and if someone else goes out, he’ll literally turn around in his tracks and go back out to have that “smoker’s club session” (as I like to refer to it) with whoever else is out there.
Statistics show that nicotine is considered the number one entrance drug leading into other drug abuse problems.
Many teenagers tried their first cigarette by the time they were in sixth or seventh grade. These teenagers often do poorly in school, do not feel like they are part of the group, so to speak, and they often times feel isolated from the other students.
Teenagers who smoke are often bad at sports, don’t necessarily aspire to go to college and tend to skip class more. Many teens who smoke also start using other illegal drugs and they begin experimenting with alcohol.
Many teens also claim to use tobacco as a means of calming their nerves and getting away from the stresses of home life and school pressures. Many also admit to finding enjoyment in hiding their tobacco habit from their parents and mentors.
