Tobacco products can very addicting and harmful. More and more restaurants and bars (even entire cities) are outlawing smoking indoors. There are also many places of work that don’t even allow smoking on the premises. With all of this and the continual increase in cigarette taxes, people are still smoking just as much as they ever have.
I also hoped that when the cost of cigarettes went up, perhaps the smokers in my life would try to quit or at least cut down. Imagine my disappointment when that just didn’t happen. In fact, life goes on and our bank accounts simply get smaller. All raising cigarette tax has done for my family is seek out mail order cigarettes in an effort to save money.
The truth about smoking cigarettes isn’t very pretty, but these are things we should know and understand
An estimated 26.2 million men and 20.9 million women are smokers in the United States. That’s 23.5 % of the men and 20.9 % of the women. 26.1 % of African American men and 18.5 % of African American women are smokers. 20.1 % of Hispanic men and 10.1 % of Hispanic women are smokers. 16.8 % of non-Hispanic Asian men and 4.6 % of non-Hispanic Asian women smoke. 35.6 % of Indian/Native Alaskan men and 29 % of Indian/Native Alaskan women smoke.
Tobacco was first discovered by European explorers in the 1500’s in the Western Hemisphere. Seeing how the Native Americans used tubes to smoke tobacco plant leaves made them curious enough to try it. When they returned to their homeland, they took tobacco plants with them and planted it as a cash crop for export.
By the early 20th century, smokers in America and Europe consumed more than 1,000 cigarettes per annum. Today, more than 46 million people smoke 420 million cigarettes a year in America.
Diseases associated with smoking kill a startling 4 million people each year and every 8th second somewhere in the world, a smoker dies due to some smoking-related disease.
The idea that smoking relieves stress and the peer pressure of teens has the number of smokers on the rise. Many teens consider smoking to be a mature activity and so they feel like they are acting like an adult and are big and powerful when they start smoking. It’s only later on in years when they realize how stupid they’ve been for purposefully accepting poison into their bodies with the possibility of having severe health issues and even an early undesirable death due to a choice they made because they thought they were being grownup.
One statistic claims that every cigarette smoke takes a whole five minutes off of your life. That means that even if you smoke a ¼ of a pack a day (depending on what you smoke), you’re losing a half an hour off the end of your life. I don’t know about you, but after literally watching my mother take her last breath in a hospital bed, every last second is important to me and it’s mine. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. My question for you is, how many minutes can you afford to lose?
