Smoking addiction is one of the hardest addictions to beat, but staying smoke-free after you successfully quit is even harder. Some people quit up to five times before they understand how to successfully quit for good.
When most people consider quitting smoking cigarettes, they think about the nicotine withdrawal symptoms and of the habit; many think if you can get past quitting, you’ve hit the gold, but this just isn’t the case.
In fact, the true key to quitting smoking successfully is learning how to remain smoke-free. It’s important to understand what triggers you to want to smoke. You can learn about these triggers before you begin your smoke-free journey. Write them down and attempt to deal with these triggers differently, without the aid of cigarettes.
It can be very important to keep a journal because you can not only track your smoking triggers, but you can also keep track of your successes, which may help you later when you’re having an off day.
It’s also important to let the people around you know that you are quitting smoking. Stand firm and don’t give into social pressures. In fact, if your “friends” are pressuring you to smoke, you need to find people to be around who respect you more than to pressure you into doing something that you’re trying to stay away from, especially when it’s a negative influence.
Create a quit smoking goal and set a final quit date. It’s important that you make your quit date realistic and don’t be too hard on yourself. That doesn’t mean you should stretch it out unrealistically either as a means of putting it off. If that’s the case, you may want to re-evaluate whether or not you are truly ready to quit smoking.
It’s important to make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin C and eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. Getting enough physical exercise can also be very beneficial to you in your quitting smoking journey.
If you need a support system, find one! It can be a quit smoking group, friends or family members or members of an online community. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone who is going through the same thing as you are or who, at the very least, knows what you’re going through.
Hanging around positive friends and family members will also be of great benefit. Especially if those friends and family members are non-smokers who are supportive of you quitting. It’s important not to surround yourself with people who are pressuring you to quit, though, but a positive support system will be helpful in the long run.
