Stress can ruin a lot of things in life for us. If we don’t head it off and learn to deal with it safely and correctly, it can greatly hinder our personal and professional life.
Smokers need to learn to deal with their stress levels without the aid of tobacco cigarettes
If you’ve made several failed attempts to stop smoking, you likely understand the difficulties a smoker goes through when it comes to learning to deal with their stress differently.
Many smokers use cigarettes as a kind of adult pacifier as way to comfort themselves and deal with a stressful situation. It’s important to remember that not all stress is bad stress. Happy situations are stressful too.
Babies often need a pacifier in their mouths for comfort and dealing with sleep issues can be extremely difficult when a parent decides to wean their child off of a pacifier. Thinking of cigarettes as a similar comfort method helps many people understand the situation more clearly.
A big part of smoking is breathing in and out deeply. That being said, one positive thing an individual who is attempting to quit smoking can try is simply slowing down and breathing in deeply. Taking deep, controlled breathes allows our bodies to relax and slow down. Many people, high strung or not, stop several times a day to smoke, which means often times they are standing or sitting alone or quietly, essentially breathing in and out deeply and getting their thoughts in order. This is especially true for smokers who don’t smoke indoors.
You can still take a moment for yourself and breathe in deeply without having a cigarette hanging out of your mouth. When I was growing up, I dealt with stress by taking a 10 to 15 minute power walk. My favorite time was in the late evening when no one was out and about. I had a poor self image, so this allowed me to scoot through the night alone where I could be myself and not be worried about I would run into. I also often sat out front on the front steps and watched the world go by. It was there I made my life plans, sorted out issues that were going on in my life and worked on my writing ideas.
These things may not work for everyone, but it’s important to pick apart the reasons behind why smoking may be so important to you. It’s true that the nicotine addiction plays a huge part in the draw to smoke cigarettes, but what else about smoking a cigarette do you love so much? Think about it and attempt to implement those positive parts of smoking into your life. There are many ways to deal with stress differently and this is a time for you to begin learning about yourself and how you deal with stress. It’s time to find other outlets to rid yourself of your anger and frustration.
