If You’re Planning On Quitting Smoking, Make Sure You’re Ready

Cigarettes hurt just about everyone. With all the information that’s made readily available to the public through school, internet and public television ads, smokers turn away from this information every day.

It’s important to make sure you’re completely ready to quit.  Many smokers think about quitting often.  In fact, every smoker I’ve ever spoken to has considered quitting more than once, no matter how hardcore they are about it.

How do you know if you’re ready to quit smoking for good?

putting out a cigaretteOnly you can know the answer to that question.  One thing I can say is that I’ve noticed a common theme among smokers.  No matter how much they want it, the addiction continually pulls them away from becoming healthier and they literally talk themselves into believing that this is the life that they want and that it’s everyone else that wants them to quit.

The truth of the matter is that most of us don’t wake up in the morning and plan to poison ourselves or shorten our lifespan.  You can’t honestly hope to not only live a shorter life, but also spend the remainder of your days sick and uncomfortable.

If your own health doesn’t stop you in your tracks, consider the people around you, particularly your children, if you have any.  Especially if your loved ones are non-smokers, it just doesn’t seem fair that they should also suffer because of your habit.

Personally speaking, I’ll admit that the financial burden of living with a smoker gets on my nerves unlike most things in my life.  Nothing makes me angrier than running out of money and looking around my house to find that all the smokers have cigarettes, meanwhile I’m trying to figure out how I can afford to buy diapers for my daughter.

Every smoker I’ve ever spoken to claims they would go without cigarettes before going without food or taking something away from their children or families that they need so that they can continue smoking, but that just isn’t the case.

At the risk of sounding a tad bit angry, I can say that without a doubt, smokers are some of the most selfish people I know.

That being said, that is just me talking.  You may have even heard it before.  It’s conversations like these that tend to shut a smoker off and make them dig their heals in and be even more defensive and stubborn about quitting.

You’ll know when you’re ready, but the truth is, no one is ever ready to give up a habit that is very bad for them, but also makes them feel good.  Not to mention that it can take months for a smoker to stop thinking about smoking constantly and withdrawal symptoms last at least three days or more for most people, which can make for a very trying time for both smoker and surrounding family and friends.

You will probably never be totally ready, so it’s very important that you make sure you’re mostly ready and face your fears.  Expect to fail, but don’t fail on purpose.  Self destructing never got anyone anything in this life and everything that we gain of importance typically takes hard work and a lot of effort.

All frustration and resentment aside, I wish you the best of luck and hope your journey is easier than expected.

I have never thought of smoking in the way this article mentions. Interesting. But, I have seen drinkers become way more selfish in the same way, they never want to do without that liquor even if their family goes without necessities or even hungry, and it's shameful. . . . Plus, cigarette smokers don't become angry, cruel, and just plain stupid as drinkers do. . . .
