Avoiding Pressure From Other Smokers When You’re Trying To Quit

Quitting smoking can be insanely difficult, especially if you are surrounded by people who still smoke. The odds that you come into contact with friends, family members and co-workers on a daily basis who are smokers are extremely high.

Smokers seem to have to justify that what they are doing should be considered okay.  Unfortunately, every time someone is smoking a cigarette, they are also affecting the people around them with second hand smoke, not to mention the damage smoke does to walls, furniture and more.

girl cutting a cigaretteI find many smokers to be quite indignant when it comes to their smelly costly habit.  Many take the attitude that it is their God given right to pollute not only their lungs, but the lungs of everyone around them, not to mention the world in general.

It pains me to look into my daughter’s innocent eyes and wonder about the effects of her father’s smoking and her own sweet little health.  We don’t allow smoking in our vehicles or in our home and we avoid taking her around people who are smoking, but information suggests that children can still experience the effects of second hand smoke even if the child isn’t put directly into the smoke.

I think that some of the most problem smokers run into is the constant temptation.  So many people smoke and if other smokers are aware that you’re a smoker, it’s almost expected that you will go hang out in the “smokers club”.  The repeated questions and invitations to “go out back and have a smoke” can become old fast, not to mention don’t aid you in your cause to fight the smoking habit.

Ultimately, it’s your inner strength and the support of the positive people around you that’s going to win out in the end.  Talk to your loved ones about what you’re going through so that they understand.  It might help to get your feelings out and to hear their thoughts and feelings on some of the same things that have been bothering you.

It’s also helpful for the people you live with and spend the most time with to be able to tell you about the issues they’re having with you quitting smoking.  You may think that you’re the only person going through what you’re going through, but the fact of the matter is that the people around you are going through their own things too.  Sometimes, it takes more than just you to succeed in such a difficult life change.

There are many reasons to quit smoking.  There’s your health and the long term affects that smoking can have on your life and your children or future children.  You have to ask yourself if your addiction is really worth putting your child’s health and life in jeopardy.  As a parent, I can honestly say that no amount of pull would make me intentionally put my sweet little girl in danger.
