If you stop smoking for two years or so, your lungs completely heal, as if you never smoked a cigarette in your life.
(I think it's two years, don't remember well)

I don't think they heal, I think they just improve to a point and then just remain at whatever state they can improve to.
It does permanent damage to your lungs, however if you quit smoking for a long time it improves. It is still bad, but not as bad as if you continue smoking.
They would probably improve, but never be fully healed the way they were before one was a smoker.
I quit smoking about 16 yrs ago - I was really proud of myself! I smoked over 25 yrs and a pkg a day. I did get better lung function and felt better after I quit. Recently I got pneumonia and with xrays and all the exams - my lungs DID get damaged from years of abuse. I shudder to think what my lungs would be like if I had smoked all those years since I quit.
In a nutshell, I think smoking damages your lungs especially if you smoke for alot of years. But think what you lungs would be like if you didn't quit.
We are all going to get old and die. But if I am going to get very old, I want my quality of life to be the best I can get. I don't want to be hooked up to an oxygen tank or have my activities limited. If I'm gonna get old, I want to do it with as many faculties as I can. That was my main reason for quitting.
I also believe that your lungs can heal so far - I did a lot of damage by the amount I smoked and due to length of time. Hope this helps!
